When a few things don’t belong to us, they are meant for others.

“When a few things don’t belong to us, they are meant for others, then fight with others, to make them yours that thing you like.”

Maharaj-ji Inspired Reflection

Reflection

Beloved, how gently this reminder comes: not everything we like is meant to be ours. Still, the mind clings, the heart reaches out, and before we notice, we are struggling with others, trying to pull toward us what was never given to us by Grace. In these moments, Maharaj-ji whispers through such a quote, inviting us to loosen our grip and remember that love, not possession, is the true measure of a devotee.

Attachment makes us believe, “If I do not have this person, this role, this honor, this object, I will be incomplete.” When something clearly belongs to another and we still fight for it, suffering arises on all sides. The other is disturbed, we are restless, and the heart becomes crowded with comparison, jealousy, and fear. It is as if we turn away from the wide, open sky of God’s love and fix our gaze on one small cloud, insisting it must be ours.

To recognize, with honesty and tenderness, what belongs to whom is itself a spiritual practice. It is a way of bowing to the Lord’s arrangement in each life. We can look at a blessing in another’s hands and say, “Maharaj-ji, this is Your prasad for them. Thank You for letting me witness it.” In that moment of inner pranam, the urge to grab softens, and the heart learns to rejoice in another’s joy.

Neem Karoli Baba lived in such vast love that there was no tight fist around anything. He showed us, again and again, that real love does not say, “Be mine,” but simply, “Be blessed.” When we let go of the fight for what is not ours, space opens inside for what truly belongs to us: the sweetness of devotion, the peace of surrender, and the quiet knowing that we are held in God’s arms just as we are.

Teaching

Beneath this simple quote lies the timeless teaching of vairagya, dispassion born from love. It is not a cold turning away, but a warm trust in divine order. Whatever is truly meant for us cannot be kept away, and whatever is not meant for us cannot be held, no matter how tightly we clutch. Life flows according to a wisdom far greater than the plans of our small self.

When we stop fighting over what is not ours, we step out of the battlefield of ego and into the courtyard of the Beloved. There, we can rest. We begin to live with open hands, receiving what comes, releasing what goes, and blessing what was never meant to stay. In this way, every gain and every loss becomes Maharaj-ji’s teaching, leading us deeper into trust, deeper into love, deeper into the simple prayer of the heart: “Let it be as You wish.”

May Maharaj-ji empty our hands of what is not ours, so He can fill our hearts with what can never be taken away.
