Maharaj-ji's woolen blanket on wooden takhat with marigolds and candlelight

Who is Neem Karoli Baba?

Neem Karoli Baba, lovingly called Maharaj-ji, wandered the villages and hills of North India like a simple, barefoot sadhu, yet carried the boundless presence of the Divine. In the Kumaon Himalayas he sat on stone platforms, wrapped in his checkered blanket, feeding the hungry, blessing the brokenhearted, and silently turning countless minds toward God. He rarely gave long discourses; instead, his teaching was his being — a radiant, practical love that could see straight into a person’s heart and heal what it found there.

Born in the early 1900s and living much of his life in the holy lands of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Maharaj-ji left his body in 1973. Yet devotees still feel him in small, ordinary moments: in the kindness of strangers, in a simple cup of chai, in a sudden wave of peace. This blog is one tiny ripple in that living stream of grace.

His Ashrams: Homes of the Heart

Maharaj-ji never belonged to one place, yet his love crystallized around a few sacred homes where devotees still come to sit, sing, and remember.

Kainchi Dham · Uttarakhand, India

The hilltop ashram by the Kosi River, founded in 1964, where the mountains hold a deep, golden silence. Here Maharaj-ji sat on the porch, laughing, scolding, feeding, and blessing those who came with empty hands and full hearts.

Vrindavan · Hanuman Garhi

In the land of Krishna’s play, his Vrindavan ashram feels like a quiet refuge tucked inside the bustle of devotion. The Hanuman temple there holds the sweetness of bhajans, sandalwood, and the feeling that Maharaj-ji has just stepped into the next room.

Taos · New Mexico, USA

Founded by Western devotees after his mahasamadhi, the Taos ashram carries Maharaj-ji’s presence into the high desert sky. It is home to Ram Dass’s legacy in the West — a place where his teachings of love and service continue to flower in a new land.

The Four Instructions

Maharaj-ji gave many playful teachings, but again and again he returned to four simple instructions. They are like four saffron pillars holding up a single temple of love.

Love Everyone

Beyond likes and dislikes, past all stories of “me” and “you,” Maharaj-ji asked us to see every being as a form of God. To love everyone is to let the heart stay open, even when it hurts, and to trust that this openness is itself the path.

Serve Everyone

For Maharaj-ji, service was worship. To offer someone food, a smile, a ride, a place to rest — these were not small acts. They were ways of touching the feet of God hidden in the world. This blog bows to that spirit of humble, joyful seva.

Remember God

On buses and in temples, in kitchens and in hospital rooms, Maharaj-ji kept turning hearts toward the Name of God. Remembering can be as soft as a whisper in the mind or as steady as the breath. However we do it, he pointed us again and again toward the One who lives in everyone.

Tell the Truth

Truth, for Maharaj-ji, was not harsh or cold. It was tender and fearless, rooted in love. To tell the truth is to live with a clear heart — honest with ourselves, gentle with others, and willing to let God’s light shine on every corner of our lives.

About This Blog

BNK Believer is a quiet corner of the internet for those whose hearts lean toward Maharaj-ji, whether you have visited his ashrams many times or only know him through a single photograph. It is a small digital asana to sit, breathe, and remember.

Here you will find devotional writings, shared teachings, stories of devotees, reflections on pilgrimage, and the simple, sometimes stumbling practice of remembering God in ordinary life. A bus ride, a grocery line, a sink full of dishes — all of it can become a small temple if we hold it in love.

These words are written with love and offered freely, as prasad. May something here help you feel less alone on the path, more held by grace, and more willing to trust the mysterious ways Maharaj-ji continues to move in this world.

Jai Siya Ram 🙏

May Maharaj-ji’s blanket of love quietly find its way around your shoulders, wherever you are.
